Billy came to
Virginia in 1989 and planted his first field of Christmas trees
in the fall of that year. Meeting Betty the following year, he
soon had a new wife and partner in both the Christmas tree farm
and the old-time band they very quickly started. While their
vocation is Christmas tree farming, their avocation is playing
music with their old-time Appalachian string band, the
Reed Island
Rounders. They frequently perform at VCTGA annual
meetings. Both are known to bring out a fiddle, guitar, or
banjo at the drop of a hat. Their recordings are always for sale
at the farm.
Eco-friendly trees: Billy and Betty believe in growing
their premium Fraser firs without the use of environmentally
harmful insecticides. When you get your Christmas tree at our
farm, you may be assured that no poisons have ever been used on
your tree. We control our insects using only organic methods
such as the encouragement of the so called good insects that
control the bad ones. We have even imported these good insects
at great expense to facilitate our
eco-friendly growing practices. |

Three times VCTGA
tree
contest winners, Reed Island Farm has had its trees grace
the Virginia Governor's mansion in Richmond in 1998, 2003, and
2005. One of their trees found its way to the office of the
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, in Washington, D.C., through the
2004 Capitol Tree Program. |
